BRIGHT was launched 1 January 2026, founded on a donation from the Novo Nordisk Foundation and based at DTU. BRIGHT is standing on the shoulders of Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability (DTU Biosustain) which has come to a close.

BRIGHT serves as a science innovation hub for developing efficient biomanufacturing technologies, focusing on three primary mission areas: sustainable materials, microbial foods, and microorganisms for net-zero agriculture.

The aim of BRIGHT is to provide scalable, bio-based alternatives to fossil-derived products, supporting global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Biotechnology has the potential to provide innovative, transformative and scalable biosolutions to planetary boundary challenges.

Mission

To be the global leader in developing research-based, innovative, transformative biotechnology solutions to catalyse the green transition of society.

Imagine that we are in year 2036 and BRIGHT has been functioning for 10 years!

We have asked four of our researchers to do just that - and then describe what impact their research have had by then. This is a thought experiment - but it also indicates our aim of creating real-world impact, because in this way we ask ourselves "what to do in 2026 to reach this goal in 2036".
